Meet Our Staff

John Lockhart, Pastor was called to First Baptist Church in August of 1983.  This calling was to his first pastorate.  John was raised in Jackson, Mississippi, and graduated from Mississippi College.  He received his Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry degrees from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.  He has studied pastoral care and counseling in Houston through the Pastoral Care Department of Memorial Hermann Hospital System.  He is currently enrolled in the Academy for Spiritual Formation.

One of the old confessions of faith declares that our chief end is to love God and enjoy Him forever.  I believe that.  We ought to do that as early as we can and for as long as we can.

John and his wife, Sharon, have two sons, Joshua and Joseph, who both live in the Houston area.

Mark Moeller, Associate Pastor

Mark joined the FBC team in November 2011. Although born in South Carolina, Mark considers himself a Texan. After graduating from Texas Tech University with a Bachelor of Music Education, he earned a Master of Music at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. In 2004, he graduated from the Robert E. Webber Institute for Worship Studies in Orange Park, Florida with a Doctorate in Worship Studies. He is serving as an adjunct instructor at Lincoln Christian Seminary in Lincoln, Illinois and a guest lecturer at Houston Baptist University.  He and Lisa (a TCU graduate) are the blessed parents of Nathan and Ryan.  Granddaughter Kinley joined the tribe in August of 2014. Grandson Bryson joined the tribe in March of 2019

The focus of worship is not human experience, not a lecture, not entertainment, but Jesus Christ – his life, his death, and resurrection. – Webber

Sandy Bills, Minister with Students and Families –  Having served in other roles prior to her current position, Sandy is continuing to nurture deep roots in this community of faith.  Those roots are deep AND wide as she walks alongside children from birth through high school.  One of her deep passions is ministering to the whole family. This truly takes a village – a village known as First Baptist Church of Richmond.

I pray that, according to the riches of his glory, he may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power through his Spirit and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love.  Ephesians 3:16-17

Doug Thorpe, Business Manager – joined the church in April 2001.  As a native Texan and a Houston area resident since 1979, Doug has served in financial services most of his career; first at Texas Commerce Bank which later became Chase Bank of Texas.  Then he spent 20+ years as a consultant and advisor to clients nationwide. He has served the Kingdom with various faith-based initiatives including Jobs Ministry Southwest, the regional non-profit who ministered to hundreds of area residents after the financial crisis in 2008. He brings to us his great experience for best practices in financial reporting and fiduciary controls.

I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.  ~Philippians 1:6

Doug and his wife Susan are active members of our choir. They have five children and seven grandchildren.

Ashley Kennedy, Mother’s Day Out Program Director – was born and raised in Louisiana. She graduated from the University of Alabama with a Bachelor’s of Science. She married Brian and they have 3 children; Taylor, Mason, and Kaitland (Kaity). All 3 children have attended MDO, and have now moved on to “big school”. Ashley enjoys the outdoors, sports, water activities, and just having fun.  She loves being around children of all ages.
“Children remind us of how simple life can be, we choose to complicate things. Children are truly a blessing from God.”
The Kennedy family are members at FBC and are involved in many aspects of the church.

Sherri Pirie and family, (Bob, Sherri & JoeBob), joined the FBC family in 2006. After her job as full-time rodeo Mom and homeschool teacher ended, she joined the choir and began volunteering in the church office each week. Volunteering has now blossomed into a new chapter as a ministry assistant since March 2015.

I believe in Christ like I believe in the sun. Not because I can see it, but by it I can see everything else. C.S. Lewis
